Heirloom. This is one of the remaining introductions from Saunders Challenger Series. Flowers are dark mahogany crimson, single, cup-shaped, with a large mass of silky stamens. Original plant received from Countryman's Peonies, so we believe this is from the original plant. RARE. (Saunders, 1929)

Early. Single white peony, resembling white anemones, with side facing blooms with a deep orange gold center of stamens. They are slightly nodding on rather tall stems with lacy foliage and multiple blooms per stem. Rarely offered for sale it performs best in an area with afternoon shade and a woodland like leaf mulch. Flowers are fully double. When first open, the petals are pink with darker pink edges that mature to white centers and a pink picotee on the tips. Early. Pale blush pink has large 6" blooms with petals 2.5" wide. Named ‘Lovebirds’ for the way in which the two carpals bend toward each other, like lovebirds at play. Sidebuds provide a lengthier bloom season. Foliage is very attractive. (Saunders/Goldsmith/Smetana, 1984) Hybrid.
